Part of C'Avedon's ongoing "Mud Series," this image focuses on his most engaging subjects – fashion and mud – which have been central to his career: a stark dandelion poised above a science beaker filled with mud.
The lab beaker "frames" the dandelion as an object of study, turning the camera’s – and by extension, our own – gaze back on itself, inviting us to consider what becomes of nature when it is subjected to constant observation and reduced to specimen.
An early pioneer in applying the formal techniques of fashion photography to accurately record the form and structure of mud, C’Avedon captured "Mud Portrait #1" in a single take.
